Question on CV Waves

#1 Postby galaxy401 » Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:25 pm

Why is it that many tropical waves off Africa move westward at a very fast speed? We're seeing Chantal struggling due to the fast speed and I remember storms last year struggling off Africa due to their fast speed. Can someone explain why that is? Does it have to do with fast west wind or what?

I would Google/Wiki the articles on trade winds and the African easterly jet for starters.

The strength of the low level trade wind flow in the MDR is a function of the pressure gradient between the Azores-Bermuda high and the ITCZ.
