5 AM discussion, advisory

#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Tue Sep 09, 2003 6:22 am

Good morning. Isabel remains a dangerous category 4 hurricane on the saffir simpson scale. At 5 AM EDT, the center of hurricane Isabel was located near latitude 19.1 north, longitude 45.7 west or about 1050 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands. Isabel was moving towards the west northwest at 14 mph. A turn towards the west is expected during the next day or two.

Maximum sustained winds are 135 mph with higher gusts. Some slight strengthening is possible over the next day or two. After that, official forecasts call for a bit of weakening as Isabel runs through a cold wake left behind by Fabian. However Isabel is expected to remain a dangerous hurricane throughout the next 5 days.

Minimum central pressure is 948 mb or 27.99 inches.

It looks like Isabel will remain on the westerly track for a while. As for the remnants of Henri, that will keep the high surf and winds going for a few days at least!!!

Thanks for the update, Jim. I agree that Isabel could strengthen a bit today, before weakening some in the next few days. But I would expect Isabel to maintain at least Category 3 strength during this time, and it could re-intensify later in the week.
