Newbie question

#1 Postby dwang » Tue Sep 09, 2003 12:23 pm

Hi all,
Been lurking here for about a week and decided to join this excellent discussion board!! I'm very excited to be a part of this forum.

I have a newbie question regarding hurricanes. Why do hurricane leave a cold wake/signature in the water it just tracked through?

Welcome dwang to storm2k and about hurricanes leaving cool waters behind that is because they cause upwelling of the waters and the more cold waters rise from the bottom of the ocean to the surface causing that trail of cooler waters.

A powerful hurricane such as Fabian and Isabel will also draw energy from the warm ocean it is moving over....and the result is a cooler ocean afterwords...sometimes as much as 3-4° F.
