[quote="beoumont"]I just heard from fellow hurricane chaser, Tony Brite, who hails from Wilmington, NC. He intercepted Arthur's eye at a position 1.5 miles ESE of Beaufort, NC. Sitting in his P/U Truck he sat within a stone's throw of the water and estimated maximum gusts in the 85-90 mph range just before the eye moved over. His position was 9.7 miles NNW of Cape Lookout, which reported a gust of 101 mph. I say Tony was in the best possible position to intercept this hurricane landfall.
Actually, There is a better spot. you can get to within about 3 miles of cape lookout lighthouse. Take HWY70 east from Beaufort, turn onto Harkers Island Road, and go to the end. At the end of the Island you can look directly across the water to the lighthouse. Open sound water to the North and South as well. It's the closest place you can drive to the Cape. I have rode out several storms there and it really gets rocking. The Cape Lookout National Park Service office is right there as well.

Did you go there during Arthur? Were there any overwashes along that road? I'll pass that info on to Tony for his next chase in that area.
