This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Isabel observations, west shift?

#1 Postby Stormcenter » Tue Sep 16, 2003 8:58 am

Isabel on visible satellite still looks impressive
despite the shearing. It does look like she
shifted somewhat toward the west the last few
frames. It's probably just like one of her many past
wobbles and nothing more. Thank goodness she
probably will not be anything like the monster she was
24-48 hours ago when she finally does make landfall.

Monster is a very subjective word when used in conjunction with Hurricanes. IMO, Isabel is still a monster, just not as big and bad a monster as she was. If you have been through a CAT3 or better hurricane you know what I am talking about. In 1983 here in Houston we had CAT3 Alicia, not a monster by some standards, but a $5 billion dollar monster none the less. In 2001 we had a little TS called Allison. Don't try and tell anyone that experienced her that she was not a "monster"-another $5b monster in fact. My point is just because she has weakened, it does not mean she is not still a very dangerous storm, especially for areas where no one has experienced a severe Tropical cyclone in decades or longer, especially for areas where the building codes do not normally take into account hurricane force winds. And last but not least, Isabel still has to go across the warm Gulf Stream waters prior to landfall. If she acts like Hugo(see posts elsewhere)she could easily be a strong CAT3 at landfall. And yes it does appear in the last few frames she is jogging west, probably a reaction to the rebuilding happening on her western side. JMHO

I also see the westward turn, will be interesting to watch and see if it is just a wobble or if she continues that direction. Also it looks like she is becoming better organized on the west side this morning, the clouds seem to be filling in a little more.

vbhoutex I didn't mean to sound like I was downplaying Isabel at all.
I know VERY well she is still a very dangerous storm and as you stated she still has the Gulf stream to travel through. I just thought is was good that she , at the moment, is not a cat. 5 storm.

I understand Stormcenter, but having gone through some of the storms I have in my many years on the Gulf coast I want to make sure the "newbies" understand just how dangerous a hurricane can be, even at "lower" strengths. It is indeed wonderful that she is not at CAT5 MONSTER strength anymore. I WOULD NOT WISH A CAT5 HURRICANE ON MY WORST ENEMY!!!! I did not intend to "get on" you but to make a point.

Well, pressures have been dropping the past couple of days at buoys along the Florida east coast in the Bahamas. Not to say she's headed directly west, but maybe a little farther west than expected?

A Florida landfall is certainly possibly, but still VERY unlikely.. I say it's still aimed for NC. Remember yesterday when she hit the wall and moved ever so slowly NNW..

I also noticed that westward jog :o Lets hope it is just a wobble or just a shift in the center due to trying to reform on her west & southwest side. Time will tell.
