I've seen 15-18 foot swells in the Atlantic back in 1979 when I was aboard an aircraft carrier, even that HUGE sucker was rolling like a tin can!

I grew up in the St Pete area of FL and there were always small craft being rescued by the Coast Guard because they went too far out and got caught in a sudden blow...and this from just a common afternoon thunderstorm.

I can't imagine 50-foot seas! Sure enough there will be some yahoos offshore when things start to get really bad. By the time they realize it, they may not have the power or navigation ability to get away.
