LAST MAJOR HURRICANE TO STRIKE LESSER ANTILLES?

#1 Postby AussieMark » Wed Sep 24, 2003 7:24 pm

I was wondering has a major hurricane struck the Eastern Caribbean Islands(not including Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico) since Georges in 1998?

If not geeze that area must be overdue by now 6 years without a major strike and all those Major Hurricanes that have formed in the period 1995 -2002.

1995-5
1996-6
1997-1
1998-3
1999-5
2000-3
2001-4
2002-2
2003-2(so far)

get my drift.

Don't know if Lenny qualifies as a major hurricane but he did significant damage to St. Maarten and the surrounding islands in November 1999.

Lenny was definitely a major hurricane when it hit St. Maarten in 1999.

Lenny hit St Martin with 110KT winds, and also sat over the island for many hours. One of the worst hurricanes ever for the Leeward Islands, plus, it hit from the west, destroying much of the unprotected western sides of the islands

Still, point well taken. I was thinking that the other day when I was talking to a friend about David and Frederick. I thouhgt it had been some time for the islands, thankfully.
