Good afternoon everyone . Hurricane Juan weakens slightly this morning as he heads for Nova Scotia. A rain and wind warning remains in effect for Nova Scotia. A hurricane force wind warning remains in effect for the marine areas of Nova Scotia.
At 11 AM EDT, Hurricane Juan is centered about 360 miles south of Halifax, Nova Scotia. If you're plotting at home, the coordinates are latitude 39.4 degrees north, longitude 64.1 degrees west.
Hurricane Juan is moving towards the north at a faster forward speed of 20 mph. A continued northward motion with a further increase in forward is expected for the next 24 hours. On this track, the center of Hurricane Juan will pass through Nova Scotia later tonight with heavy rain squalls and hurricane force winds, especially in gusts.
Maximum sustained winds are near 100 mph with higher gusts. Further weakening is forecast as Juan heads into cooler waters near Nova Scotia. Juan will being to lose it's tropical characteristics as well. Hurricane force winds, particularly in gusts are likely in Nova Scotia. The reason I say gusts is because the waters in Nova Scotia's coast are very cold in the low 60s. The boundary layer at the surface will be stable. So any high winds aloft may not all come down to the surface. That's why any hurricane force winds in Nova Scotia will likely be in gusts as opposed to sustained winds of hurricane force.
Anyway expect wave action for the middle atlantic coast in the order of 5-9 feet. 10-15 foot waves are possible in the Cape Cod area with possibly greater than 15 foot waves for the coast of downeast Maine. No serious wind impact is anticipated for New England.
In Nova Scotia, landfall is expected to occur later tonite with heavy rain squalls and wind gusts to hurricane force. Waves of 20-25 feet are possible offshore from Nova Scotia as well as a 3 foot plus storm surge.
Minimum central pressure with category 2 hurricane Juan is 973 millibars or 28.73 inches.
Tropical storm Kate is moving north northeast late this morning. At 11 AM EDT, the center of Tropical storm Kate was located near latitude 24.5 north, longitude 43.3 west or about 1275 miles east northeast of the northern Leeward Islands.
Kate is moving toward the north northeast at near 10 mph. This general motion is expected to continue with a decrease in forward speed over the next 24 hours.
Maximum sustained winds are near 60 mph with higher gusts. Some slight strengthening is possible over the next day or two.
