It wasn't a Cat 5 according to the NHC Public advisories. It DID get to 150 mph east of the Islands though.

This track from UNISYS doesn't show Georges as a Cat. 5 hurricane, but as a Cat. 4.
You can check Georges' Storm Log in the link below:

Could have been a lot worse. It was a Strong Category 2 when it hit there. Had it hit as a Category 4, it would have been a catastrophe. The U.S. coastline was also lucky... Category 2 at the MS landfall and the passing just south of the Florida Keys.

135 x 1.152 = 155.52 = 156 mph

> 155 mph = Cat 5 so 135 kts would be a Cat 5.

7 Hurricane GEORGES 15 SEP- 1 OCT 135 937 5

However, the Saffir-Simpson scale ALSO says >135 kts for Cat 5. 156 mph is greater than 155 mph but 135kts is not greater than the 135kt maximum of a Cat 4. So it all depends on whether that 135 kts was rounded up to 135 or down to 135, I suppose.

i see! the problem (if is there one) LOL is that they (unisys) have Georges as 130kt (thus cat 4)on the front page and a 135kt( thus cat 5) on the best track.

i think that considering they(NHC) use 5mph intervals for intensity a cat 5 would need to be more in between 156.5-159 to be round up to 160mph( cat 5)
so is more likely 155.52 would be rounded to 155mph(cat 4).But dont know for sure!
