Summer officially begins today in the northern hemisphere. The summer solstice will occur Sunday at 8:57 PM EDT. The word solstice is latin for sun stands still. At the summer solstice, the Sun will be directly over the Tropic of Cancer. Sunlight reaches its northern most point of the year across the northern hemisphere. The sun reaches its highest point in the sky at noon in the northern hemisphere. The solstice also brings the most hours of daylight in the northern hemisphere north of the tropics.

Well by summer actually started at 8:57 P.M. EDT, thats makes most the day was still in spring. So you should just say June 21 is the real first day of summer.
