This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

97L Quikscat...not even CLOSE to a circulation....

#1 Postby Derecho » Mon Jul 19, 2004 10:28 am

Was actually surprised at how poor it looked, considering that the previous QS, which missed it, implied one from the edges...

wow I am very surprised. How could it be so different from last last passes that even tough it missed it, had arrows pointing straight up and down.

I was just as surprised considering the last solution. However...

I looked at the latest ambiguity product and it looks like there are soultions that would support a developing circulation there...albeit a weak one.

It might have somthing to do with the fast movement of the wave not reflecting the south side counter clockwise in relation to the north side since the south side convection is weaker. Still it just looks to open.

Whether or not there was a surface circulation at the time of that pass, I don't know. But over the past couple of hours, it sure looks to me like this thing is getting its act together. And if you zoom in on high resolution using the following link ...

http://wwwghcc.msfc.nasa.gov/GOES/goeseasthurr.html

... you can see what appears to be low-level bands starting to form and wrap to the SW and S of the convective mass (in the visible sat imagery). Coupled with the evident banding already found to the E, NE and to a lesser extent, NW, of the system, I have to believe there's an LLC in there. If it gains latitude and slows a bit ... as I expect ... it's almost certainly going to become a TD. We'll see.

I agree that 97L is starting to look alot better. I would not be surprised to see this thing go TD by tomorrow.

That is questionable. We will have to wait to see if the mid-level circulation holds. At this time, there is no low-level circulation... but we will have to watch and see.
