Sanibel Island....

#1 Postby Anonymous » Thu Aug 19, 2004 2:21 am

With 22 now dead after Hurricane Charley, I am asking a question...
Nobody has ever died on Sanibel Island in a storm. My dad loves this place. He was last there in 1985, and says he wants to die a VERY old man, reeling in a huge fish, and just as he gets the fish in, a women in a bikini walks by, he has a heart attack and drops into the sand, where the tide carries him out into the sea.

Did anybody die ON Sanibel Island? And if so, can people post pics of arieal views of Sanibel?

Sanibel reopens today, found this article on CNN's website. It mentions damage, no fatalities though. Wouldn't we all like to choose the way we'd like to go when it's time Floydbuster. Smiled at your dad's description of when his time is up.

I think that there's only a handful of people that stayed. It is a beautiful island!

Sanibel and captiva, I look at them as one, is/are one of my favorite places on earth that hold very fond memories for me...Has anyone heard if THE BUBBLE ROOM on Captiva survived?

No one died on Sanibel unless it went unreported. Only about 20 people stayed after mandatory evacuation and they were eventually found, rounded up and escorted off island. The damage to most of the barrier islands was not quite as bad as originally reported. Even Captiva which was hit hard was not demolished as we first heard. (Sorry, I haven't heard news about the Bubble Room or any specific businesses). There's a website called :http://www.mysanibel.com that has fairly good information. The Fort Myers News Press and http://www.nbc-2.comand http://www.abc-7.comalso have good coverage. Hope this helps.

My friends on Sanibel all fared well. My best friend only lost a couple of pool screens and the boat is still hanging on the davit!! She didn't even lose any trees like we did but, unfortunately, most of the island lost a lot of vegetation.

OOPs. My URL's didn't work but you can cut and paste. There are probably aerials on some of those sites. We're having round the clock TV and radio coverage so I haven't checked out all of the websites.

Here's a news story that NBC2 did on the Bubble Room:
