Fl Res - From a Hugo vet

#1 Postby HugoCameandLeft » Thu Sep 02, 2004 7:06 am

Sadly for you, it appears as though Frances is going to hold course for S. - Mid Fl --- As a veteran of Hugo I can't stress enough how much you need to respect this storm. Most of you likely remember Andrew, but if you weren't there then, please take heed that a Cat 4+ hurricane is more destructive than you could ever imagine. Please don't allow your curiosity to see the storm to cause you to stay in a place you need not stay. Remember, such large storms have large surges, and often this surge kills just as many as the wind, if not more. Please let your curiosity be satisfied with pictures and news reports from afar. Don't take the unnecessary risk of riding out the storm (this holds esp. true if you are on the coastline)

My prayers are with all affected by this monster. May God's peace be with each of you.

luckily, peopel DID see what Charley did just weeks earlier, so they may be morel ikely to evacuate when told to. these storms are some of the most powerful things in nature and not to be underestimated.

IIRC, Hugo's surge was almost 22 feet... that fact alone still haunts me.

That is the only good thing to come out of Charley, and hopefully many more lives will be saved because of it.

I am a little concerned, never having been in a hurricane. I am outside the evacuation zone by a few miles. They are telling us to evacuate locally here in palm beach county. We have hurricane shutters but live in some condos in Jupiter Village. Do I need to worry about the structure I am in? I have two sons ages 4 and 1, so I am especially scared for them.

Shannon, if they are telling you to evacuate, don't think twice, GO. If it's a voluntary evacuation I would still go to a shelter - it's bound to be safer. And don't wait - when they say you should go, do so. No matter WHERE this mother makes landfall we are ALL going to be effected by it, it's just a matter of how badly. Please keep yourself and your family safe.

Leave it behind

Evacuate means leave. You can replace the house. Take some pictures with you and clothes toys ect. for the trip. Leave early the roads are already filling up even here on the West Coast. There are no rooms available in Tampa according to TV reports last night. Good luck and God's speed.
