Marianas still dealing with effects of three typhoons

#1 Postby senorpepr » Sat Sep 04, 2004 7:31 pm

Emergency relief assistance has been flown by a helicopter to the Northern Islands of the CNMI to supply its 33 residents with much needed food and water.

The Islands have been hit by three typhoons which have disrupted infrastructure and communications.

Gemma Casas reports the Office of the governor says it received a radio report from Northern Islands mayor Valentin Taisacan that the islands of Agrihan, Pagan and Alamagan, where 33 indigenous people live, suffered massive damage from typhoon Songda.

With winds of up to 193 kilometers per hour, the typhoon destroyed 100 per cent of the residents' crops and agricultural products. The mayor says the islands' food and water supply are running out.

On Saipan, the disaster recovery centers of the Federal Emergency Management Office has opened up to distribute relief goods. The islands of Rota and Tinian will open theirs on Sunday.

Loan applications from the U.S. Small Business Administration which offers low-interest disaster assistance loans for homeowners, renters, businesses and nonprofit organizations, are now being distributed.

Millions worth of properties were damaged and over 2,000 residents were left homeless.
