Wind Gust of 121mph in MELBOURNE?!?!?!

#1 Postby Anonymous » Sat Sep 04, 2004 11:53 pm

Im certain I heard this guy say this. Anderson Cooper and this met (I think hes a met) are reporting from Melbourne, and just now he said he recorded a wind gust of 121 mph and sustained winds of 100 mph. Either he is lying or this storm is incredibly powerful.

It cant be true, if that was the case this storm should have 130 mph winds in the NE quad...

If sustained winds are 100mph that far away then the central max winds have to be around 115-120mph. I just can't see a 105mph storm with 100mph winds extending 35-40 miles from the center. A supposed Cat 2 storm of Frances strength would probably have 100mph winds 10-15 miles out maybe but not nearly 40 miles.

Is there a recon report to show the storms winds at flight level? I just can't believe that 121 report to be true.

Is it possible it was an anomalous gust in a really bad band? I mean, the guy did say it was a gust he recorded. Either that or his anemometer wasn't working right.

Yes, the gentleman with Anderson Cooper is Chad Myers, one of CNN's Meteorologists.

Interesting tidbit: Myers parents live in my community.

Even still, he said he recorded 100 sustained. That still is phenomenal for a 105 mph storm making landfall 40 miles south of you.

Hang in there---it's not going to slow down for quite some time. You should have terrible conditions like this sustained all the way to dawn, at least.

I believe the 121mph gust, but I put my money on the fact that that gust was recorded between two buildings so it got the venturi effect and probably upped the speed 20mph or so.

Melbourne probably will sustain the worst damage, and Fort Pierce will also be up there, as the winds wont let up in those areas.

Hurricane Force winds go out 80 miles. But 100 miles mph with 120 mph gust is something.

That 100mph reading could be wrong. Maybe it was 100mph gust. Latest NHC advisory said Indian Harbor Beach which is just N of Melbourne had 63mph sustained with gusts to 78mph? Hmmm what's going on? lol

It is easily possible, IMO. I believe that Frances is a category 3 as the system is on the shoreline.

Fort Pierce taking sustained, prolonged northern eyewall.

It's pouring in on Fort Pierce right now...

he took pains to explain that the wind WAS recorded between two buildings to make a point. Secondly, the eye is about 50 miles in diameter so you have to go 25 miles before you get to the inner edge of the eyewall. Also, winds in the next spiral band out from the eyewall can approach those within all but the strongest portion of the eyewall. Right now Chad Meyer is estimating sustained winds of 85-90mph with gusts over 100 in the open. CNN reporter in Fort Pierce reporting that he has been told by Police that winds there are 95G110mph
