Frances has been predesignated as retired.

I wouldn't doubt it with Ivan though :)

Ivan hasn't even made landfall yet so no clue. Hopefully he'll weaken considerably before landfall. :)

Frances was already retired before she was anything. The French govt. asked the NHC to do so because in foreign languages such as spanish Frances means french... so it causes them confusion... some b.s. in my opinion!

I think we should get back to more Standard names like john, brian, tom, cathy, etc. lol hermain, gaston, frances... what it up with that! haha

i'm just joking, i know we should have cultural influxes... ;)

If it was not being retired any way Frances might not be retired. Because it was only a cat2 hurricane for one. You can't retire every hurricane that hits!

Yes, She should be retired on account of all the lost sleep and frazzled nerves on this board.

Plus if damage reports near Charlie, then you would definitely think so.

She was a Cat 4 and a Cat 3 over the Bahamas!

Hurricane Carol was only a cat2 and look what she did to New England.

Hurricane Diana was a cat2 and she killed many in Mexico.

One of the deadliest hurricanes in the Atlantic (Hurricane Fifi) never went higher than Category 2.

If I remember correctly- retirement has more to do with

how memorable it is- will people be confused in 7 years if the name comes back?

what it did over the course of it's stay- Francis may have caused significant damage totals if ONLY because of how big and slow she was and how many different people she hit (even the small fry add up eventully)

Death totals

And requests from other nations are always considered. Last year Juan was retired after it hit Canada (I think it was Canada at least.) Did no US damage... but it was retired. Fabian was up for retirement consideration (I think it was retired but I can't remember) and he did no US damage.

Francis sat and spun over the Bahamas for a very... veyr long time- may have a significant US pricetag, was a significant international storm... and was very very memorable.

I would have seen her retirement even if she hadn't been slated to begin with. Alex? I would not see Alex's retirement even though he brushed the carolinas. Bonnie probably won't be retired either.

Charley, Francis, maybe Gaston (ranks up there with Allison according to some of the sources I've seen), and perhaps Ivan depending on where he goes and who he affects.

My thoughts:

Alex - No
Bonnie - No
Charley - Hell yeah!
Danielle - No
Earl - No
Frances - Yes (Her and Charley will be seen as a tag-team, kinda like Connie and Diane)
Gaston - No
Hermine - No
Ivan - Too early to say
