Funny update; could have been serious

#1 Postby Terry » Mon Sep 06, 2004 11:39 am

We lost our power several hours ago (first time during the entire Charley and Frances events). Winds were still quite strong this a.m. in Lakeland!

I was listening to WFLA Channel 8 on my radio when they announced a tornado warning on Viper --- located SW of me and headed to LAKELAND. Holy Crud - Hurricanes are Ok for me, but not tornados.

Daughter, her cat, the 5 cats we're fostering from Charley were upstairs in our tall two story house on the nnw side of a lake. Hubbie was outside cleaning up the yard mess.

Long story short --- woke daughter up, yelled at hubbie to come inside (he listened for once), got the six cats into a downstairs bathroom. Moved our kitten and small dog into another bath. Put big lab in safe hallway. Couldn't find three of our own cats. Neigbhor's cat ran into our garage. The rain and wind picked up markedly.

I grabbed the camara. Think I got at a picture of at least the cloud bank the thing was located in as it crossed sw to ne at south end of Lakeland. It was reported NE of here as just a funnel cloud by some guy who saw it.

Moral of the story --- leave everyone downstairs until two days after the hurricane passes.

Back to cleaning litter - the yard type and the type from having too many indoor cats inside for too long. Then will head to Anna Maria Island to check our property there. Those who can view Channel 8 and BayNews9 have seen them reporting one block south of our house there. Part of roof came off of a hotel on the beach and landed in the parking lot. Normal island low-level flooding so the house should be fine.

Enough already. Stay safe north/northwest Floridians! Frances is a mean, mean girl.

We had only three cats. I adopted a kitten who was found on Hwy 60 right after Charley came through. My daughter was here with her cat riding out Frances with us.

In addition, daughter and I had been down to the emergency pet shelter (from Charley!) on Friday to see if they needed any help. They wanted all of the cats outta there for Frances' visit. There were five adult cats still there. They belong to a family that lost their home during Charley and cannot have the cats wherever they are temp. living. So...........we brought the five home in cages, with lots of litter and food provided to us.

That make a total of ten cats in our house for Frances. But the neighbors cat got caught outside and he came in. 11 cats total, but soon we'll be back to just 3 and a kitten and of course the 3 birds, four Abaco hermit crabs, and two dogs. Most sadly, I had to take our 14 yo lab to be put to sleep on Friday.
