I am sick, sick, sick of some reporter standing on a beach breathlessly exclaiming how "conditions are deteriorating." No one should ever be allowed to use that term ever again - in fact, the general way all the news stations report on a landfalling hurricane is nausea-inducing. I'm also sick of reporters on the beach warning of being "swept away." They act as if some little monster is going to crawl out of the surf, grab you by the ankles, and drag you under.

Being swept away is what happened to those people who started driving across the causeway as the eye of the 1926 Miami Hurricane passed overhead. You don't get swept away standing on a beach watching tropical storm force squall lines roll in.

How about "this won't be another elena'"" to less than 12 hours later hearing "Sort of reminds you of Elena, labor day 19 years ago..."

The best was Stephanie Abrams on TWC yelling "Watch out watch out watch out" and diving off camera. When the camera panned, it showed a small piece of siding rolling down the sidewalk.

How about...."we will monitor the situation for you"; "will it turn in time"; "don't focus on the center of the cone"; "we just don't know at this time"; "yet another eye replacement cycle"; "the rain is stinging my face"; "it's too far out to tell"; etc. etc. etc.

A non scientific method of measuring storm surge. One reporter got a palm branch and put a piece of tape and then checked it later to see how much it had risen. It was so staged and contrived. But the palm branch waving in the wind made for good drama.

Here's a few from CNN...

"Crashing" into east Florida

"Hovering" in the Gulf northwest of Tampa

Using the word "Peninsula" to point out what they really meant as the "Panhandle". And at random, continuing to incorrectly use the terms interchangeably to pinpoint the location of the eye.

Oh yeah, there's another one - "Pinpoint" the eye :)

That was precious.

However, after standing out in high winds and probably dodging a lot more than that, a little slack should be cut for all, I think... given the issue of adrenaline buzz.

My favorite reporter moment wasn't really a moment and didn't really develop into anything. But it could have gone cowabunga... that was Jim Cantore hiring an amphibious vehicle to drive the crew to the coast.

"this is an east coast situation..." as francis plans her tampa exit..."as we've said before, you just can't predict these things" hurricane warning has been issued as frances resurfaces in the "warm gulf waters/..." (can you tell I was up all night with this storm...)

How about CNN reporting that landfall was in "Stewart" FL. It is the largest city in that entire county and they couldn't manage to spell it right on any of the graphics. It's Stuart. We're talking a national news network, you'd think that they would do just a little fact checking before they put it up there!!
