Checking in from Brevard County

#1 Postby spaceisland » Mon Sep 06, 2004 2:40 pm

Weather friends...

The first rain band came through at 9 pm Friday. Power and water went out pretty quickly. It is now 3 pm Monday, and we just got water and electricity restored... unlike many of our neighbors. Being without utilities is definitely one of the hardest parts. (Although the coffee on the Coleman stove never yasyed so good).

We just removed a large Maple tree from the front yard which fell away from the house (thank the Lord). It was hard work in the heat and humidity.

We lost shingles, but the roof was not breached. Some neighbors lost most of their shingles, and a few had trees down on their homes.

The strongest wind was 124 mph at Port Canaveral, about 25 miles north. We probably experienced about 90 mph.

We are praising the Lord that he spared us as we hunkered down... because it was so dark, the children slept in the shower through much of the worst of it, which came in the early morning Sunday as we went through the northern eye wall.

We are still experiencing tornado warnings and strong thunderstorms this afternoon... yet another feeder band... more than two days after Frances' arrival!

Once again, the lines are long at Home Depot to get plywood to cover holes in roofs and walls.

What will we do if Ivan comes? How do you "board up?" How do you LEAVE when there is NO gasoline?

I am checking in too, from Merritt Island. Landlord is on the roof of the house now, seems we need new roofing. He's patching now to avoid leaking problems.

We got power back about 2:00 (complete with cable connection) Phones are still working only outbound... no inbound, goes to voicemail after ringing and ringing.

We stayed in Cocoa and Channel 6, 9 and CBS news also stayed there. Got to talk to CH 6 Nancy Alverez - what a trooper...she was going up and down Brevard through the storm...she is very sweet. Anyway, between all the news outlets there, we were able to get reports throughout and all in all, it could've been so much worse.

BTW, they also told me that Ivan "would be knocking on our back door this weekend" Hummm....let's hope not...

How are housing prices in Wyoming?

Glad you are doing ok and hope things turn out for you. I can imagine how scary it was.

Have Aunt and Uncle who live on Vega Ave. on Merritt Island, have you heard anything from that area. They left and went to Georgia. He has to be back tomorrow for chemotherapy and they are trying to get back home.

Thanks for any info.

I don't know about the roads between Georgia and Merritt Island, but I am confident that they will have minor if any problems. Roads here are passable as far as I can see (and I've been in touch with friends from various parts of the island...all report same) From what I understand the only real damage is to mobile homes.... and even then, it's not major for most.

I stayed only 5 miles from my home (first exit to the mainland) and got home in 15 minutes flat. Leaving is one thing, getting home is another.... and you never know what will stop you in between. That's why I don't go great distances any more. Took me 6 hours to get home from Floyd and the only thing in my way was everyone else and a few trees. I got a good lesson from that and a big headache to remember.

Hope all is well with your people.
