Reporting in from Tampa

#1 Postby caneman » Tue Sep 07, 2004 8:39 am

Still have no power at home after 48 hours. At work working from a back up generator. All the rivers in this area are reporting moderate to major flooding events. Heavy tree and signage damage especially down by the beaches. Storm surge was unbelievable in downtowon Tampa and parts of St. Pete. This from a 70 mph. storm. I found it to be much worse than ant other Tropical storm like Gordon or Gabrielle and I think worse for us than even Elena sitting off the coast. The back end of the storm as it hit the Gulf near the beaches was by far the worse. Once it hit the water all He!! broke lose. Anyone in this area who is not afraid of what a Cat. 2 + Storm surge can do after seeing this and many of the bridges under water, is nuts. While it could have been worse, the 36+ hours of non stop wind and rain has taken its toll. I had the misfortune of evacuating from Charley only to end up in it in Kissimmee and while that was bad, at least it only lasted for about 6 hours. Don' t really have a chance to read any of the other posts so hope all other Central and South Floridians are reporting in ok. Had a chance to check on the track of Ivan and don't even want to think about it. Majority of gas gas stations don't have Gas, glad I topped it off before hand. Take Care

I'm sorry to hear that caneman! I have two sisters living in Dunedin, who I'm sure must be seeing the surge by now too. Keep safe!

reporting from Clearwater. Never lost power(very lucky). I agree about the storm surge, although local met (ABC) said it was in fact coastal flooding not storm surge. Anyway, a Cat 2 would be much worse as far as the bridges go that was crazy. The Ivan track is somewhat frightening but again local met says that history shows that a track that far south has never hit Florida. Any thoughts on that from any mets?

Hang in there Florida

History has not been a good indicator for this season. Many things have happend this year that have not been what is suppose to happen historically or climatologically speaking.

that is very true. History has been made this season alone. Just trying to be hopeful I guess.

In St Pete, we just got power restored after 48 hours without. My parents house in Shore Acres (St Pete) had water within a foot of their front door. I really don't want to think about going thru this again, it's depressing.
