This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Anyone chasing Hurricane Ivan?

#1 Postby stu » Fri Sep 10, 2004 2:30 pm

Anyone chasing Hurricane Ivan?

I leave the UK Sunday on route to Tampa to chase down Ivan – Really I don’t want to get into a debate over the ethics of hurricane chasing – but if anyone else here is planning a Ivan chase can you email me your contact cell phone numbers – I would like to have some contacts the ground.

All the best

we will be chasing the surf... looks like Pensacola
to Gulf Shores Alabama could have epic conditions.
SE swell with a North wind... Just hope it's not
blowing 100mph... current forcast is for 15mph
winds Tuesday morning with overhead surf.

Good luck stu! We desperately need tourism to our state, bring as many British as you can! And if you can, Tony Blair, or the Queen. We have a thing on the history channel coming out sunday about how your nation totally spanked ours in 1812. =D

You might have trouble getting into Tampa by the way.

Stu,

Hope you're going to be "self-contained". We've had quite a rough month here and our resources are stretched to the limit. Would hate to think that some first responder might be faced with trying to rescue someone willingly placing themselves in danger. Most of us here, while (almost morbidly) fascinated by the power of these storms are at the same time crouching and praying that our families, homes and our livelihoods survive. IMO your post is a bit disturbing.

Wow that sounds like a good idea. Just get into a good concrete building. And give us some epic video!

Actually...

I do plan to stream live weather data (METAR strings) from my location and I will resurect the old Isabel web cam page for some images. 8-)

I need to write the web page first and due to time issues I will write it during the 9 hour plane flight on Sunday...

Etherway the URL will be here ... once I can sit down to finish it.

http://www.ukweatherworld.co.uk/chase/ivan.htm

Like my folks over in Europe - I think that it will be kind of neat to reports some live obs.. and the odd image etc - during isabel we got over 20,000 hits from all over the world on the web cam.

As a sormchaser (mainly tornadoes) I have spent many a late late night over the internet looking at storms and hurricanes - if only someone could report some live obs...

gulfcoaster53, I do share your concerns believe me and I do know that I am opening myself up for ridicule by making this post – I would be more than happy to discuss the ethics in another thread but not this one – as it happens I have had a number of replies from chasers who will be there.

Most if all supplies (gas, food water) are already locally sourced in Tampa and I would be happy to share them any wanting local if required.

We had a chase team in Melbourne during Frances, the local services made good use of there information – much of which was gleaned from S2K.

For the record I belive that Queen is not a stormchaser - however I do belive that she has seen Twister.

Stu...if you pass through Largo (nothing against you, but I *hope* that you do not), feel free to give us a holler. We have a bunch of Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale chillin (for now) in the fridge...

You don't "chase" hurricanes...you can go into them, but I'm sure it's hard to follow behind them. :)

Stu, if Ivan takes his projected path, you won't have to chase him, he'll be chasing you. Good Luck!!!!!

Out of curioosity, when you "chase" a hurricane, what kind of dwelling do you look for to hunker down in during the really bad parts? or is that a dumb question? :)

I couldn't imagine wanting to chase a hurricane, I'm scared S#&%less over this one here in Sarasota!

I wish I could wish you good luck but I hope your trip doesn't pan out at all and the hurricane disappears. Other than that, if we are going to get hit by a hurricane one way or the other, I certainly have no problems with you coming here and if I was going to be within 800 miles of my home at the time would treat you to a beer.

I used to do a bit of white water kayaking in my youth and I imagine the thrill is the same ... you are throwing yourself into nature in her most turbulent and potentially destructive state.

No harm in it unless tens of thousands of people start chasing storms. Most people lack the means or the interest, so there will never be enough to tax resources.
