What's the evac status in Florida.. anyone still away, etc?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

What's the evac status in Florida.. anyone still away, etc?

#1 Postby anjou » Mon Sep 13, 2004 11:17 pm

I know the Keys remain under mandatory evacuation. But I'm curious whether Florida has been just cleaning up and getting back to life as normal otherwise, vs. whether many people remain at points north on extended evac from Frances, given that Ivan has been forecast for so long to affect the area.

Any views?

voluntary evac in okaloosa county if you live south of hwy 98. okaloosa county schools are closed until ivan has passed. normal garbage pick up in the city tomorrow unless winds reach 45mph. eglin afb and hurlburt field were both at hurcon 4 since yesterday and i'm sure that has been upgraded.

Undoubtedly there are some Floridians who've stayed away since Frances, just in case. Others like hubby and me made plans to hightail it outta state, but since then Ivan's changed track so the U-Haul remains parked in our driveway on standby. And we ain't bringin' it back till we're more sure there ain't gonna' be no Crazy Ivan stuff. It's an expensive good luck charm, but it seems to be working.

10 pm news said both Hurlburt and Eglin go under mandatory evacuation orders tommorrow. Aircraft are going to Oklahoma, but I'm not sure where they're sending the people. Which makes since because Hurlburt is definitely vulnerable to both wind and surge. Eglin's got a bit more elevation towards the central part of base, but they've got a lot of housing stock right next to bayous.

Voluntary evacuations in Walton county as well for low lying areas and mobile homes. Schools are closing the next couple days, and Freeport High is opening as a shelter.

Thanks all - (and for the update on the Keys). I've been kind of curious about whether there will be a big flow of people back into Florida once Ivan goes wherever. (Although I know some Floridians evac'ed to Ga. and Ala. which is not such a great thing now.)
