Local residents asked to stay off Highway 90!!! Louisiana...

#1 Postby crazycajuncane » Tue Sep 14, 2004 2:13 pm

Highway 90 is already backing up according to local radio station here in Lafayette, Louisiana.

If you are evacuating from New Orleans, I wouldn't wait too much longer.
Local residents are asked to use different routes (according to the State Police.) That way out of town people can get through quicker.

I'm guessing we have many coming from Highway 90 and heading up to I-49.

Just a heads up to those of you evacuating. It's going to be a rough night on the roads. I'm sure I - 10 is going to be hell come 5 - 6 pm tonight.

Yes, I was amazed how smoothly I made in down Congress street, but it's getting ugly on the north side of town. It looks like Mardi Gras right now!!

ugh. I live on the north side :(
I have to get across Evangeline Thruway (I49) to get home too. I bet its so backed up it will take me 5 lights to cross. It did last time when Lili came through.
Ive also heard of highway 90 known as blood alley because of all the road deaths associated with it. Be safe!
They REALLY need that damned I49 extension ASAP. how many more stupid storms have to come by before they carry out the plans?!

I don't know, but I'd guess it will take twice as long to get from New Orleans to Lafayette late this evening. I'd say about 5 hours or so. Once you get on I- 49 it gets better. Highway 90 is not good enough to get everyone out in 24 hours.

I wonder if they'll be changing the timing of the redlights or turning them to green only on Hwy. 90 (Evangeline Thruway) to get the traffic to run smoother. As for Hwy 90 into Lafayette, please be careful with the road construction around New Iberia and watch the cross streets on 90...very dangerous. There's been many many accidents.

Ya'll be careful out there.

I did here something about the possibility of changing the lights to a flashing yellow and letting the majority of the traffic flow through. I did forget to mention that. They said it was a good possibility. State Troopers going to be busting ass tonight.

I'm in Jeanerette and Hwy. 90 definitely has lots more traffic than usual. As for Hwy. 90 being blood alley -- YES -- very dangerous, especially with all the construction.

Be safe!
