Time/Speed Conversions?

#1 Postby WeatherHobby1 » Tue Sep 14, 2004 6:03 pm

Forgive this newbie question. I'm pretty comfortable with Mb ranges, but as a born and raised English system adherent, I can't do knots vs. mph very well in my head, and although I know what Universal time is all about, again the conversion doesn't come quickly. Anybody have any simple desktop software that makes these conversions (mph to Kts/Local time to Zulu), or do ya'll simply have it in your head at this point.

Also, does the NHC change their timing based on storm location? I've noticed the advisories on Ivan have recently shifted to CDT. Doesn't that make things even more confusing? :?:

See if this is any help. I find it very useful.

They use the time zone for the area under the greatest threat. Also: 1mph = 1.15 hnot.

Minor correction, I think the advisories are based on the time zone that the storm is in. ;-)

WeatherHobby,
Local time from GMT is easy, US Central Time is -6 hours from GMT or Zulu time. GMT/Zulu is the standard time used by the military and most aviators. Hope that helps with the time conversion. Knots to MPH is: knots*1.15=MPH
