What winds will they get in Oxford Miss.?

#1 Postby mkapw » Tue Sep 14, 2004 9:31 pm

I trust you people on here because I don't have a clue as to what is what with a storm. I have a sister in law who lives in Oxford Miss. Do any of you know what she can expect as far as winds, damage and such. Link below shows where she lives. Thank you. She is from MI and has never gone thru one of these so I need to know if I need to be in *mom* mode with her tomorrow and getting her ready to prepare for what is coming. Thanks!

Shouldn't be bad at all, expected to be on the west side far from the center. Gusts maybe to 40 mph, no big deal. Can't rule out a few trees down and maybe a brief power outage.

Well, actually she may have, to a point at least. Eight years ago to the day, as a matter of fact. September 14th, 1996 a cyclonic type storm formed over southern Lake Huron. It was later called "Hurricane Huron" and "Hurroncane". This is not a joke. Here are a couple of links about this freak storm.

As for what to expect, given the current track, expect gale force, or even minimal hurricane force winds as Ivan passes over. It should accelerate after it makes kandfall, so the duration should be far less than thise unfortunate folks along the coast. Your Sister-in-Law should make some preparations for Ivan's arrival. Batten down the hatches, or in other words, put away everything that could be blown away. Prepare as you would for any severe weather outbreak. Be prepared for possible loss of power. Plan on being indoors for a number of hours, as car travel will be treacherous. Of greater concern will be severe weather that occurs in the outer bands as it approaches. A storm of this magnitude will produce many Tornadoes. Your Sister-in-Law should have a batttery powered weather radio, or at least a battery powered radio to monitor approaching weather. The other concern will be flooding. Ivan will bring a tremendous amount of rain in a very short time. Be wary of flash floods, as Oxford seems to be surrounded by hilly terrain. Avoid creekbeds and low lying areas. If she uses common sense, she'll manage just fine.

I don't think the winds from Ivan will blow nearly as much in Oxford as the Ole Miss football team has so far this season.
