Preliminary Numbers for Ivan ... 106 tornadoes ...

#1 Postby Stormsfury » Fri Sep 17, 2004 8:54 pm

Should this be confirmed or even a FRACTION of those, the previous September record for tornadoes of 137 (set in 1967) goes right out the window ...

Frances reportedly had 105 confirmed tornadoes ...

I feel somewhat vindicated as in several of my discussions on my website that the condtions were indeed ripe or even more so for an outbreak that would rival or even exceed Frances, and in fact, that has happened with this storm ...

Did well with landfall, missed the stall, got the tornado threat ...

About 45 occured in an 8 1/2 hour period through this evening, with most of them striking within a 120 mile radius of Washington.

Thats phenominal! I know I've been watching the posted tornado watches and warnings for my part of VA since mid day ....its just wow!! I know a hurricane can wreak unbelievable havoc, but they don't really jump out from behind a tree and surprise you. Those tornadoes can smack you when you don't even know its an option. I'm not trying to spout wisdom....I'm just kinda befuddled. :(

It appears no one is safe even 2 days after landfall. Sheesh. Who would've thought we'd get damaging weather all the way up here in Washington. And Ivan is all the way west in the mountains!

Doubt any F4's or F5's ... but there MAY have been a couple of F3's today in Virginia ...

The strongest tornado recorded in a hurricane was an F4 spawned during Hurricane Hilda in 1964. It was also the deadliest tornado associated with a hurricane. It killed 22 people.

Don't know about what kind they are getting up north. But the ones we got down here before Ivan came ashore was like no hurricane-spawned tornados I've ever seen. Local TV met said something about it being all the dry air that was being pulled into the system.
Had one come over my house, then come down and wipe out 8 houses and a trailer park. It was classified a F-3. We had 12 major twisters in our area and countless smaller "typical" cane-twisters.
Had 5 people die in one that was about 17 miles down the road from me. It picked up mobile homes and just threw them into the woodlines.

And that was all before Ivan even got ashore.

As far as our area goes, Ivan was way worse than Opal.

There was also a F4 tornado in Galveston, Texas during the landfall of hurricane Carla on September 11th, 1961....it occurred at 3 a.m., and killed 7. It and the 1964 Larose, LA F4 are the only two violent hurricane-related tornadoes I'm aware of....but I've seen F3's in the southeast on several occasions in association with landfalling hurricanes and tropical storms.

Hurricane Danny of August 1985 caused a significant tornado outbreak in Alabama....with several long track F3's causing major damage between Huntsville and Birmingham.

I was concerned about tornadoes in this area with Ivan passing to my west....and know of several unconfirmed weak twisters in the west metro Atlanta area...including a F0 that damaged my great aunt's roof (and several other homes in her neighborhood).
