Need to get home from OK to FL Saturday...

#1 Postby nolabelplez » Tue Sep 14, 2004 11:29 pm

I am still w/out power from Frances, so I fled Florida when Ivan threatened.
Now I'm in Oklahoma, and really need to go home Saturday, but can't go before that.
Do you think I can? Looks like I-10 will be out, but with Ivan hanging around I40, that looks bad too. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You should be fine on 40 as far as Memphis...I would take 78(4 lane but not limited access) from Memphis to Birmingham. The worst flooding will be farther north than B'ham. You shold be fine going from B'ham to Atlanta and then just contine south from atlanta to Jacksonville. DO NOT cut south onto I-10...even if it is cleaned up, things will be a mess with people coming back into town.

You will be faced with the crowd of people returning, along with emergency crews entering the area, compounded by the fact that the area will possibly be devistated. Without looking at a map, I would tend to take a more Northerly route and face the rain and moderate winds.

This trip may be worse than I thought, but I have to get home.

Can I go on the interstate around Birmingham and Atlanta?

I can't believe this. I ran to escape Ivan, and look what it got me. Note to self: Evacuate, but only as far as necessary

But look on the bright side! In the mean time, you got to spend some time in the great state of Oklahoma! :D

Atlanta? Yes. Birmingham? Well you could, but it's the long way. 285 goes completely around Atlanta(you can drop south after I-20 and go around and catch I-75 just past the airport). In Birmingham, 459 drops off I-20 on the Southwest side of town and then goes around the southern part of the city and joins back up with I-20 just east of the airport.

Your best bet would be I-40 to Memphis, 78 to Birmingham, I-20 to Atlanta, 285 around and then I-75. The weather is beautiful in Alabama and Georgia today.

You can, but when you hit I-10 you will not get across the Escambia Bay Bridge if you live in Pensacola.
