BOTTOM LINE!
Ivan peaked at 165 mph and 910 mb. The northern eyewall hit as a 135 mph eyewall or category 4. The eye of the hurricane made landfall as a 130 mph category 3. Billions in damage was caused, and SO FAR over 100 people died IN ALL. END OF STORY.

Any questions about the fact that Ivan was a 3??? I mean, look at the damage reports coming out of Pensacola. Any chance this was a 4, because it looks very much like it did in Punta Gorda.

I think much of that damage was due to storm surge and Tornados.

Possibly. However, the direct hit of a three is generally not as catastrophic. I remember Andrew well, and Ivan has the Andrew look. As regards tornadoes, we had one come thru my area during Charley's exit, and the trees were twisted aroound. So, it seemed more like a strong convection to me--who knows??

The bottom line is!! At this point it doesn't matter!!!
Devastation is devastation! This is why people need to be prepared, have their insurance up to date, and need to listen to the mandatory evacuations when their posted!
Whether it's a cat 1 or cat 5 someone is going to loose their home, be injured or even killed.
So whats the point in continuing the, it was this, or that. Landfall at 130mph, around 2:30am the morning of September 16, 2004.
END OF STORY!!!!

I was born in Tampa and heard of storm surge a thousand times, but never realized the power and extent of the damage involved until Ivan. Dr. Lyons did a program concerning storm surge in the Tampa Bay area. Watching the destruction in Pensacola and adjacent areas, I kept picturing in my mind, Ivan coming into Tampa Bay and it finally made an impression of what it would mean to our city and populace. I guess a picture is worth a thousand words. My prayers are with all the people who's lives are irrevocably changed by Ivan.

Is this line of discussion any different than what eveyone has done for the last month or so - and eons before that? Every jog, stairstep, drop or rise in pressure, increase, decrease, change in direction, fish or no fish, watch, warning, and report of every storm was discussed to the inth degree - that's what makes this board so attractive to so many.
Why would one think that landfall and its effects, impact, and statiscits - whatever they may be - should be any different? Is it really reasonable - not to mention possible - to announce "END OF STORY!!!" only two days after landfall?
