Prior to Ivan hitting the coast I remember seeing Steve Lyons with a graphic showing the depth of the GOM and discussing the possible storm surge height at various points. (I think he said somthing about surge versus wave height.)
I'm wondering what role this actually played in the surge. And I'm also wondering if there is any possible relationship to the actual path Ivan took just before landfall and the intensity. I'd guess that the deeper water also equals colder water.
I'm sure there is a better graphic somewhere, but on a quick search I found a depth map at: http://www.gulfbase.org/facts.php
