Ivan and the Lone Star Rally

#1 Postby JenBayles » Thu Sep 23, 2004 2:44 pm

Just a note of local Galveston interest. Thursday through Sunday is the Lone Star Rally. Over 100 thousand "motorcycle enthusiasts" are beginning to converge on the island for the weekend. Wet roads and 2-wheeled vehicles do not mix well. I hope to God these folks are keeping an eye on Ivan. Even though a lot of folks are scoffing at such a small storm, I well remember the effects of TS Allison on Houston. Since I'm leaving for Galveston tomorrow morning, I sure hope my house in Houston doesn't float away before I get back!

They already have The Strand blocked off for vendors and bikers.

Here's a preview:

totally off topic here, but my friend is having a weekend party on Bollivar. What are the chances of the ferry getting shut down? I CAN'T get stuck on Bollivar this weekend.

Also, any idea how much traffic this bike rally is going cause on the island?

I'm guessing the ferry will still run, except late at night, there's only one and it runs once an hour. But the lines for the ferry will be LONG! It might take less time for you to leave Bolivar and head to High Island and then up to Beaumont to catch I-10.

As for traffic on the island, besides in the ferry line...I'm not sure. This is only the second time they've done this. But I've heard that traffic is really backed up on Harborside. Also, there's construction on a new trolley track near UTMB, so some of the roads out this way are blocked also.

Thanks, that is exactly what I figured. Oy Vey, what to do.... what to do.
