Hurricane Karl Advisory Number 30

Statement as of 11:00 PM AST on September 23, 2004

...Karl beginning first stages of extratropical transition...

At 11 PM AST...0300z...the center of Hurricane Karl was located near
latitude 38.7 north... longitude 41.5 west or about 785 miles...
1265 km... west of the Azores.

Karl is moving toward the north-northeast near 30 mph...
48km/hr...and this motion is expected to continue for the next 24
hours with a turn to the northeast thereafter.

Maximum sustained winds are near 90 mph...150 km/hr...with higher
gusts. Some weakening is forecast during the next 24 hours.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 85 miles...140 km...
from the center...and tropical storm force winds extend outward up
to 430 miles...695 km.

Estimated minimum central pressure is 963 mb...28.44 inches.

Repeating the 11 PM AST position...38.7 N... 41.5 W. Movement
toward...north-northeast near 30 mph. Maximum sustained
winds... 90 mph. Minimum central pressure... 963 mb.

The next advisory will be issued by the National
Hurricane Center at 5 am AST.

Looks extratropical now. Should pass through here as a cold front on Monday morning. Wind won't be anything special though, looks like less than 10kts of geostrophic wind. Should be fairly breezy in the extreme north of Scotland though.
