thanks purdue, yeah, I always thought winds were strongest in the front-right quad, which I guess would be the NW on Jeanne. Among the many ppl I enjoy reading posts, I really like yours alot. Keep up the good work.

Probably the North quadrant because the storm drags a little against coriolis is a straight west track (which is why south-moving storms tend to weaken)...

Sanibel, you're confirming winds above around 110 at the surface, right? I know it's just one data set, but significant.

Why "offshore SW Florida" -- your location? Living aboard? Or cast adrift?

It the NE Side.. Thats the worst part of any hurricane.. Thats the messy side where all the tornados spawn.

If there were a closed eyewall with consistent convection around the entire eye, then you would find the strongest winds on the north side. However, during very intense convective flareups, as we saw about the time of the max wind in the SW quad, there will definitely be higher winds outside of the "normal" areas. This is particularly true at the surface (but also elsewhere), because w/o convection you can't force those winds down to the surface.

wait...arent you the same yoda that said that shear would hold the system down and also the ssts werent warm enough to allow strenghning. that was about 6 am friday after floydbuster posted his forecast. i can dig out the post if need be.

Nope.. different Yoda that was... :)

Yes that was me...

Well the SSTs are still only about 84-85 degrees... but changed the shear forecast has... we will see. Wrong the Jedi Master can be once in a while, can't he? :P

Can't confirm surface winds. Jeanne isn't Frances. Instead of spreading out and distributing energy, Jeanne is winding up and dropping pressure. Unlike Frances, or even Ivan prior to landfall, I'll assume these pressure dips are straight translations of windspeed.

"Cast adrift" Ha ha ha! Yeah, I guess. Sanibel is an island off Ft Myers 7 miles out in the Gulf. Today I saw a man whose 25 foot sailboat lost its engine and drifted into the piers under our causeway bridge. The Coast Guard was towing him off. He looked like he was living and sailing on that old boat. Maybe he came in from the Gulf to avoid Jeanne?

I am not familiar with reading these reports.
How big is the eye?

How symmetrical is the Hurricane force wind field (meaning does the 70 miles from the center mean in all directions)?

With the hurricane force winds expanding from 45 to 70 miles from the center, is this a strengthening sign or weakening with a smaller "intense" center and winds spread out more?

Finally, for us Laymen; is there a "key" to the letters defining what each of the readings are??
