What is your opinion on Ivans strength iceangel? I just dont see this as anything less then a moderate 3 wind-wise. I think the dozens of 36" steel billboards bent to the ground is enough evidence in itself to say the winds were at least 120mph. I have seen hundreds and hundreds of pines snapped. Awnings or anything made of aluminum are shredded. Im going out tomorrow further west of Pensacola around NAS to see what damage is over there and around the Grande Lagoon area.

I saw Grande Lagoon, nobody was expecting surge to get that high over there, sadly people lost their lives in that area while staying at their homes during the storm. :( Local sheriff said a 40-foot wall of water crash through the area.

Droop
If youre going over to the Grand Lagoon area, give yourself some extra time....the traffic on Gulf Beach Hwy is usually backed up due to the debris clean up going on. Sometimes it can take an hour to drive what used to take 5 minutes.

Idiots. It is still beyond me as to why people stay on barrier islands for a major hurricane. This thing was a Cat 5 in the GULF for crying out loud.

It does amaze 'ya what people will do. I can't imagine why anyone would chance staying in an area that's only a few feet above mean high tide under normal circumstances. Even a minimal storm can create a surge that is unthinkable if you happen to get stuck in the middle of it!! The awesome power of moving water is, apparently, a mystery to some......

Hey Brent, I totally agree with you. But Grande Lagoon isnt on a barrier island. Its a subdivison located on the mainland. There are quite a few canals that run through that area too. That just shows, that in a strong hurricane like Ivan, its best just to leave if you live anywhere near the water. Looking at pictures of the damage, Im not surprised a 40ft wave hit that place. Entire houses have disappeared there.

It was the scariest hurricane I had EVER been through!! When the winds started, they gradually got more intense, and they didn't let up for I think I heard it said that it was 12 hours. There could have been tornados too.
Everyones ears in the house was popping and you know what?

This is odd: Because of the popping in our ears, it caused the blood from my dad's brain to be sucked out and cause a blood clot so he couldn't hear out of one ear. The doc. told him it would clear up in time...just like a hickey does!

Nobody was expecting water to get up there, never happened before so they weren't worried. But still, their close to the water,I would've left.
