This from the Keesler News: Tuesday was the 30th anniversary of the only WC-130 weather reconnaisance loss. Swan 38 and its six member crew, assigned to the 54th Weather Reconnaisance Squadron Typhoon Chasers, went down in the South China Sea on a mission into Typhoon Bess in 1974.
May their souls rest in peace.
This as a reminder of the dangerous mission these AF personel undertake in an effort to save lives and property.......MGC

I was at Clark AB in 1974 and I weather briefed the crew on the mission prior to the one they were lost on. The storm was in the South China Sea after having crossed Luzon north of Clark. The mission I briefed also had a reporter from the Base newspaper on board and his story appeared the day after they were lost. Bess was the first of a series 6 typhoons to hit Luzon in October and November. Although typhoon names are not generally retired, the name Bess was retired off the WPAC list as a sign of respect for the lost crew.
