Possibly New Record Question

#1 Postby HURAKAN » Wed Dec 08, 2004 11:08 pm

Has there been a season where 4 names or more have been retired? This year, as all you know, 4 names will be retired, Charley, Frances, Iván, and Jeanne. So, I want to know if we have another 2004 record in our hands. I know that 2001 & 2003 were impressive with 3 names retired but the show has been taken by the 2004 hurricane season. In 2001, Allison, Iris, and Michelle were retired. Last year, Fabian, Isabel, and Juan suffered the same luck.

I will appreciate your cooperation.

Yes, if you're looking for a record, check 1995. It had all the records. :D This year is starting the impinge on some of them though. It will likely become as infamous as 1995. The only time in my recollection that there has been a season as bad as this one was all the way back to the 1700s with the Great Hurricane. It was followed with a number of other deadly storms killing thousands each.

1998 was a bad one.

Mitch killed 10,000+ over Central America

Georges killed hundreds across the Greater Antilles.

6 Tropical Systems impacted the US.

Not as bad as 2004 but was still a Hurricane season to remember

Even though it was only because of one hurricane and not four, you could make a case of 1900 being one of the United States' worst hurricane seasons as well. The Galveston hurricane, 8000 dead, need I say more?

Also 1992. Hurricane Andrew. 'Nuf said.

(years with 3 or more U.S. hurricane landfalls)
1950: Baker (1) Easy (3) King (3)
1953: Barbara (1) Carol (1) Florence (1)
1954: Carol (3) Edna (3) Hazel (4)
1955: Connie (3) Diane (2) Ione (3)
1959: Cindy (1) Debra (1) Gracie (1)
1964: Cleo (2) Dora (2) Hilda (3) Isbell (2)
1971: Edith (2) Fern (1) Ginger (1)
1979: Bob (1) David (2) Frederic (3)
1985: Bob (1) Danny (1) Elena (3) Gloria (3) Juan (1) Kate (2)
1989: Chantal (1) Hugo (4) Jerry (1)
1998: Bonnie (2) Earl (1) Georges (2)
1999: Bret (3) Floyd (2) Irene (1)
2004: Charley (4) Frances (2) Gaston (1) Ivan (3) Jeanne (3)

Overall, along with the rest of the Atlantic, I'd say the worst seasons since 1950 would be:
1954
1955
1961
1964
1969
1979
1985
1988
1995
1996
1998
1999
2004

When I think of memorable seasons, I like to think of multiple storms making it memorable. Other than Andrew, there wasn't much else to 1992.

1955, 1961, 1998, 2004 are seasons I consider truly memorable.

for the USA, 2004 was not quite as bad as was 1992. In 1992, we had a cat 3 landfall, a cat 4, and a cat 5, along with a very strong tropical storm in Maryland. Andrew and Iniki alone, IMO, made that season slightly worse than was this past season

Well I don't think Iniki was 1992. 1992 is part of the 6 year cycle of bad year (1998,2004) and so the other storms that year would have been Bonnie, Charley, Danielle, Earl, Frances (seem familiar?). If my memory serves me right, those were the only named storms of the year, with Andrew being the only major hurricane. It just so happened to be the most expensive storm ever (not counting the cost of human life obviously). You could put a good excuse up for Mitch being the most expensive storm of modern times.

Edit: Didn't realise you were talking about East/Central Pac storms hitting Hawaii :o The name should have made be guess to be honest ;)

I'd say 1998 was a bad year for thew entire Atlantic basin. I think Jamaica was pretty much the only spot that went through the season unscathed.

August and September 1992 were really bad months for US interests worldwide as it was. On the night of August 23rd, TS Lester raised a ruckus in SE Arizona causing significant damage and flooding-Five hours later came Andrew in FL, then on the 28th came Typhoon Omar which really raked Guam over the coals and in September Iniki ripped Kaua'i to shreds. STY Gay in late November hit Guam again and then became one of those ex-typhoon ET lows to rough up the US West Coast in early December.

Jamaica and the Windwards were the only areas to not be affected in the Caribbean
