I think the key is building codes and maybe public awareness. There is no way, as Derek mentioned, to evacuate masses of people in time. I think we need to look for ways to build safer structures and shelters if thats possible. The key from what I understand is the depth of the quake to the ocean floor. The more shallow of a quake the more chances for a tsunami. I was watching Discovery about a volcano near the coast of Africa. They say it may someday split in two, with one half falling into the ocean and cause a wave 2000ft high to sweep along the atlantic ocean and threaten the east coast of the United States. Scary!! Hopefully something can be done to better insure the safety of those living Along the coasts of the world to avoid another disaster such as the one in SE asia.
