for all of you may rainfall afficianados...per jim lushine, nws/mia, here are the ten driest mays since 1900. for miami proper:1)1965 2)1992 3)1927 4)1952 5)1962 6)1989 7)1935 8)1973 9)1945 10)1903. as for southeast fla, including dade, broward and palm beach counties, 1)1965 2)1935 3)1992 4)1927 5)1945 6)1967 7)1989 8) 1963 9)1962 10)1941. in
those years, both miami and southeast florida experienced five hurricanes, despite some differences in the year. during the the driest miami mays, hurricanes landfell in 1903, 1935, 1965, 1945., and 1992. i am recording 1935 as a direct hit due to sustained hurricane force winds experienced on the extreme south fla peninsula. for the ten driest mays in the three county area, hurrricanes landfell in 1935, 1941, 1945, 1965, and 1992. thus, the "dry may " theory verifies in a rather credible 50% of the cases. jim has mentioned that a degree of ambiguity is introduced with repeated relocation of the miami office over time
