We here in Louisiana have not only had a dry April but also a very dry May. Todate we have had only .26 inches of rain so far (3 inches below normal). The top 5 driest Mays and their related tropical activity in S.E. LA and the Gulf as a whole are:
.07-(2000)- T.S. Beryl,Hurricane Gordon,T.S.Helene,Hurricane Keith
.43 (1998)-T.S. Charley,Hurricane Earl,T.S. Frances,T.S. Hermine,Hurricane Georges, T.S. Mitch (Formally Hurricane Mitch)
.95 (1992)-Hurricane Andrew
.99 (1949)--T.S. 5, Hurricane's 8, 10
1.16 (1985)-Hurricane's Bob,Danny,Elena,Juan & Kate
I believe that 1998 and 1985 were not El Nino years and that 1992 was.I am not sure about 1949 or 2000.

Parts of Ascension Parish have been very dry as well no #'s to back this up, other than my water bill. But my work takes me through almost all of south Louisiana and I've found the drought to be the worst in some time in the SW part of the state, west of Lafayette. In 1985 Juan cured the drought and "den some".

We were pretty dry as well in May 2002, the year of Isidore & Lili. In fact we were in a drought situation . See link below:

May of 2002 would have went down as one of the 5 driest Mays but in New Orleans we received 2.39 inches of rain at the airport within the last 6 days of the month. Not enough to make the top 5 but certainly the top 10.We still ended the month with a 1.58 inch deficit.As far as the rest of the south LA it was very dry overall.

1998 was a steroid La Nina year and part of that 22 (if memory serves me correctly) month or so drought we had. 2000 was awesome. I think that was the year I got hit with raindrops from 7 different tropical systems (including one from the EPAC that crossed over and just brought some rain up). That was an exciting year.

You sure about 2000? I remember the drought as well as the hot temperatures, but the tropical activity was lacking. I think you must be thinking about 2002.
