QUESTION

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Has a area of disturbed weather ever gone straight to hurricane status

skipping the depression and tropical storm stages?

Well, it's not as if it "skipped" those stages. Going from a blob to a hurricane instantly? Rather, I would suspect that an area of disturbed weather in early November at 38.5N/50.4W wasn't really attracting the attention of the NHC at that time.

In the post-season analysis, it was actually a subtropical storm that became a hurricane. Operationally, it was a hurricane out of nowhere. If the nearby ship didn't report hurricane winds, they probably never would have upgraded it.

I remember that storm. Back then Bastardi's tropical discussion were free and he was calling it a hurricane way before the NHC did.
