When will be our first major hurricane 2013?

We probably will not see a major here on out. Models go out to 2 weeks and no substantial evidence for one to form. We may not even see another hurricane this season much less a major. After that we are in November, no late blooming season or at least any proof one will happen. Almost ready to call it season (not really a surprise at this point). 2013 will go down as one of the few years in the satellite era without a major.

I'm assuming also that this season is virtually done. 40 mph or 50 mph storms really don't count from here, we've seen more than enough of those - they never strengthen the least bit. The last chance would be for a Kenneth-like storm to form, but Kenneth was an extremely rare storm, and that year already saw a few major hurricanes, this year, we've seen 0. Narda was locked to become a hurricane, but as a 2013 storm, it followed the pattern and stopped suddenly at 65 mph. This has to be one of the least active EPAC seasons on record.

When is the record for the latest Cat 3 or above?

In the satellite (1979) era every season except 2 had major hurricanes, 1986 and 1994. Every other year had one by mid to late September so 2013 is the latest record in regards if one were to form going by that dataset. This is for latest FIRST major. If you're looking for latest storm to make a major it's early November I think? 1932 Cuba cane.

We were fortunate not to have one or more than one this season - with the budget as it is it'd have a real problem...

We have a north wind and cloudy skies here in South Florida this morning, so for us the season is about over - hopefully eveyone will disregard those 2014 "busier than average" long-term forecasts that I'm sure will appear soon...

I am loving the transitioning weather down here. Aside from rogue Caribbean storms that might show up; It is a welcome end to this unusually hot and humid season. I also think its worth noting that it has seemed like Thunder was very absent in our many rain events this year, just accenting the lack of instability.

Outside Sandy and to a lesser extent Irene and Isaac, we have been incredibly lucky the last five years. Or maybe it is more a climate signal than luck...

Maybe they will predict a tranquil 2014 yet it turn out active...or it will be like the 2011 PHS (low numbers but mostly big ones)...
