I live in boyton beach and managed to meander over to the beach today when a rather intense band came through. The rain and sand was stinging my face and I was something I won't forget then the police let us no that we were parked in a no parking zone. Here in boynton beach we didn't get the worst and I really feel bad for the people in dade county right now god be with them. I will not soon forget these last 11 months when we had 3 hurricanes hit our coast. Anyone else make it to the beach today?

Report from Sunrise.

Lost power around 810pm. UPS backup only lasted a few mins with the UPS battery. Been 2 1/2 hrs now and power still out. FPL says after winds die below 35mph they'll be out any time within 24hours after that.

I grabbed the 875amp battery out of the car I'm restoring and connected a cable I made to the UPS backup so I'm good to go for a small light and the puter for a few hours at least. Not gonna blow it all at once though.

WARNING and DISCLAIMER!!! Do NOT connect a car battery to a UPS backup unles you know what you're doing!! IT CAN EXPLODE!!!

UPS backups are meant to charge UPS sealed batteries via a different charge rate and process than car batteries. A Car battery MAY EXPLODE if the power comes back on!! The UPS BACKUP MUST BE UNPLUGGED FROM A/C house current BEFORE connecting a car battery! ALSO...the wires used to connect MUST BE BATTERY CABLE THICKNESS with the proper terminals soldered on to the UPS backup or the wire will overheat and catch fire!!

AGAIN....DON'T DO THIS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!!! I ONLY highlighted some of what I did so you know HOW DANGEROUS THIS IS IF YOU DO IT WRONG!! IT'S NOT AS SIMPLE AS A COUPLE WIRES TO A BATTERY!

WOOPS....almost forgot the weather report....HAHA!!

Actually pretty calm out right now. Local station round the corner reporting 4 with gusts of 12 but looks more like 15-20 out.

OH MANN down to 11.6 volts? REMINDER.... walmart batteries have no reserve capacity!!! ANd its a brand new battery with a full charge.

OH WELL!!!

CYA!!

I can't believe it but the southern eyewall has reached nearly down to here (Key Largo), the center really kept coming south, the closest spiral band is now coming into the Upper Keys as the center rolls off just westward of my. I still have power...

Wind went from a wooshing sound to roaring, tall trees across the street are really whipping around, very gusty, pelting rain.

This is unbelievable. The storm is behaving totally unexpectedly. Many areas are getting hit without warning. Also the fact of alot of damage being reported in Dade and Broward leads me to believe a strong Cat 1 landfall.

Yes, I don't think I've ever seen a storm deviate this much from the NHC short-term track...they must be going crazy right now...should they begin to worry about the lower FL Keys?

Rain just increased significantly, sounds like fire hoses directed at my roof. No big trees down yet, thank God.

We are sheltered some I guess because the wind has to go over a lot of land before it hits us from the west, not as bad as if it was coming from straight offshore.

Wind increasing, tropical storm gusts. Stuck my head out and jumped back when the first huge whoosh pressed on everything. But little or no damage, only small branches down.

If this doesn't get worse, we will have dodged a bullet too. Should have paid a little more attention to the GFDL model.

Hurricane force gusts at molasses reef reported on CBS4; that's offshore and at 10-meter height.

To those worried about the middle and lower keys, there may be some bayside flooding (just speculating here) but not much structure damage. If the rest of the keys get the squalls we are getting, people will be OK. I am concerned people on boats.

My power stayed on! :D

We dodged a bullet again in Broward. I feel sorry for the folks in Dade though.

OK, hope it's quiet now for a while.

Just came back from the beach. Puffy breezes 0-20mph from the N - NE

I wish it was daytime because you can see there are some awesome clouds sweeping down towards the emerging center. Sanibel faces south on the Gulf so the entire track is south of us. There are occasional flashes of distant lightning, but nothing directly visible. To the east are the lights of west Florida as if it was a normal overcast night. To the south is an epic cloud layer descending into darkness you can see on the horizon where the storm is emerging.

Gulf is lapping 1.5 foot waves.

Back again from Sunrise

FPL is top notch! Power just came back on after only 7 1/2 hours!
They usually beat their estimates but I didn't figure they'd be out there
in the dark just after a storm passed with 18mph wind and gusts to 25.
Its dangerous out there when you can't see what damage has occured and might step on a downed wire. Those guys get my vote!
With all the transformer flashes in the sky and surges earlier...a breaker probably tripped so all they had to do was access it from the ground with a long pole. I'm just guessing...but must be the case bcus they wouldn't be up in a bucket under these conditions. Great svc!!

No rain here at the moment but ocassional light showers passing.
Wind at the neighborhood station in Sunrise reporting 18....but seems
gustier at times.

Neighbor behind us never got their roof fixed from last year. It's an older flat shingle roof and during heavy summer storms they lose a few tiles. They must've had 40 tiles or so I could see lifting in the wind ready to fly off. THE BAD THING IS...they have one of those flimsy tin sheds behind their house that's gonna fly apart if we get a good one! Only good thing is it's tucked in a corner of their house shielded from direct wind. They also left long boards outside behind it, plastic lawn chairs in the yard and a plastic bucket that would be a nice projectile thru a window! And most people including myself didn't board up this time. Lots of people left things in thier yards. I see basketballs, patio furniture....and lots of uncovered windows.

Was pretty surprised at the SW course the storm had taken just after
making landfall. The northern edge of the eye passed right over us and
just as we started getting on the backside...NE eyewall winds that's when we lost power.

I had 22mins of power with my UPS rig earlier and when I tuned in briefly
around 11 (via TV card in the PC) Bryan Norcross said at least one computer model had Katrina taking the SW course. Good for us....bad for the Keys SW dade and extreme SW florida.

Looks like we made it through this one ok. Hope others are as fortunate.

ONE NOTE: During power surges the cable tv kept flicking off and finally we had no cable at all during the power outage. THIS MEANS....I made the right decision about not leaving DSL for cable. Cable internet is faster than DSL by 3x or better....but I never lost my phone or my DSL line once!

That was an experience ...

Back on line now. The back side of the eye hit with a heck of a lot more force than the front side did. Definitely sustained hurricane force, with probably gusts into the mid 80s.

We didn't have much rain up here - maybe two or three inches by my guess - but wind did a moderate amount of tree damage and damage to signs etc. and knocked out power for most of the area from US1 west. Aventura has underground cables, so they seem to have stayed up through the storm.

Much bigger rain event in the south part of the county, apparently.

Just got a big rainband here with 40 mph+ sustained wind. Best band we've gotten the whole hurricane. But definitely dodged it here.

anybody else in the wpb area that is going thru this wicked feeder band right now, easily some of the worst weather we've had with Katrina. If i had to guess is that we got sustained winds 35-40mph with gusts 50-55
