Antalaha took a direct hit and is reporting heavy damage. It's a major agricultural city and the heart of Madagascar's vanilla production. Reports are saying 90% of the crops are destroyed.

Sort of an eerily ironic tidbit I came upon regarding the name of this storm. Indlala is a Zulu word meaning "hunger, famine, and starvation." Hopefully it won't be as bad as past landfalls of similar-strength storms in Madagascar, but it isn't looking good. :(

There was an article about Indala in my newspaper this day. It stated that Indala killed more then 60 people and that more than 50.000 people have been displaced.

In the district of Ambanja, landslides buried several settlements, killing twenty people, including 6 children. According to the Red Cross, more then 300.000 people have been hit by this cyclone.

Officials have raised the death toll to at least 80, with at least 105,000 people homeless.
