If you watched the analysis on the local stations; it is almost up to the ridge now and the turn to the West should occur pretty soon. I don't think we will see any further shift to the North of the track.
If the track does go as the NHC shows; Hurricane Force winds would barely reach the southernmost part of Dade County. I would suspect only in gusts too.
The Keys would get smacked.
But they got smacked by Katrina too.....

5 AM NHC advisery said Rita is headed about 280 now.
She is past the weakness and with her traveling into the eastern side of the ridge her track could even go a little south of due west.

NHC is following SHIPS now for intensity as we all knew they would.
This is a dangerous scenario for the keys which will be on the strong side of the storm, and it makes Rita a major hurricane mid gulf.

Depending on windfield size Dade could easily see hurricane force gusts so obviously heed any evacuation orders. Certainly heavy rain and some storm surge will require evacuations of low lying areas prone to flooding.

Max Mayfield just said that we here in Miami-Dade are "cutting it very, very close." The primary concern is still for the Keys who could see storm surge from both sides, espeically if it goes through the Keys. He said if there's a significant shift, which some of the models have done, north, then he could see having to extend the 'cane warning to at least Miami-Dade County. It wouldn't take much for the eyewall to come further north which is why they're thinking that way.

he also said his hurricane shutters are outside at each window ready to go up, maybe he sends stewart or avila to his place to install them.

Did Max mention any possibility for watches/warnings to be extended on the west coast? I'm still kinda confused why extensions to the north on the east coast may happen while no discussion of west coast plans have been mentioned.

:?: :?: :?: Confused in Naples...

LSue - he didn't specifically mention the west coast, although they usually follow suit. The NHC probably figures they have a smidge more time for the west coast than the east, but that's the only thing I can figure. The 11am advisory should be pretty indicative of their thinking and I would think watches/warnings will be issued/changed at that point to give everyone time to prepare over there.

disclaimer: just my opinions, may not mean squat - follow official NHC info and advice from your local officials :)

If Broward is closed, I can almost guarantee that Dade will close. They're probably waiting for the 11 advisory.

Canelaw..

Thanks for your response about SW Florida watches and warnings.

I'm basially thinking the same...it's just a bit unsettling at times to read about the expanding east coast watches and warnings area while wondering what Rita might have in mind for us! Especially our neighbors in Everglades City and Marco....

The waiting continues...
