It looks like we will have to wait a while before we see a named storm or even a depression.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
440 AM AST FRI AUG 7 2009

TROP ATLC CONTINUES TO REMAIN VERY QUIET WITH NO THREAT AREAS TO
DISCUSS. LATEST 200 MB VELOCITY ANOMALIES FROM THE 06/00Z RUN
FROM THE GFS CONTINUE TO INDICATE UNFAVORABLE CONDITIONS ACROSS
THE TROP ATLC THROUGH AUGUST 20 AND WITH CLIMATOLOGY INDICATING
THAT SAL EVENTS DO NOT DIMINISH SIGNIFICANTLY UNTIL THE LAST WEEK
OF AUGUST WE WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER COUPLE OF WEEKS
BEFORE THINGS CAN GET MORE EXCITING ACROSS THE TROP ATLC.

Back over the Atlantic, things are much quieter.

A couple of weak tropical waves continue to move west across the tropical basin, but these are not expected to show any organization. The Atlantic basin is forecast to remain quiet through the weekend.

Well if the season kicks off after August 20 we could be looking at 7 storms or less. According to climatology we should be at 3/1/0 in storms by August 20th.

This is Florida's Year.

The Gators might have a really good football season as well...

In 2005 anything that looked like it might develop did.

In 2009 anything that looked like it might not develop didn't.

you might be right....unofficial opinion

one thing to remember is that at least with storms that approach florida from the east, they often make a second landfall on the gulf coast, particularly in Louisiana....i.e., betsy, andrew, katrina

Well looks like the Pacific has really come alive, looks much closer to what you'd expect in those basins in an El nino summer.

Certainly seems like the tropics is coming awake, even in the Atlantic.

approach mid-August....and even in 'slow' seasons... what was mistakenly taken for flat-lined and dead turns out to have maybe been just a nap....and what we are seeing know is not even close to the 'wide awake' season to come in the next 6-8 weeks.

Yep...two systems on code red.....90L and the remains of 92L making a possible comeback....not to mention the low probability code yellows near florida thrown in for added effect.

Nothing?

ok so I think the ITCZ is the most perfectly straight i have ever seen it. not that it means anything significant just thought it was sort of funny, it looked like a flat line, and since the tropics are dead right figured i would point it out ..

I think your fail failed. :cheesy:

Exactly... everyone calling for the thread to be locked apparently doesn't know what the thread was initially about in the first place. This wasn't a "season cancel" thread. It was remarking solely on the fact that the ITCZ over the Atlantic was in a straight line--no curvature whatsoever.
