No problem, but what does it have to do with Emily being retired? We know it's rare, but...

OK, I'll go back on the topic. Do you think Emily should have been retired as well?

As other peope have mentioned, Emily wasn't retired because Mexico didn't ask for it. As far as the Greek alphabet goes.. it is still being used. The backup list idea was not approved. At least that is the word on the street...

Well... the decision is up to Mexico. They didn't feel it caused enough damage to warrent retirement.

As for my personal feeling... I don't think more than half the names that have been retired in the past decade deserved retirement. Actually... two maybe three names really needed retirement this year and I still feel that is generous. Retirement, in my eyes, is like retiring a baseball jersey. You don't retire every player's number just because they made a few homeruns... you retire it because it was so above and beyond.

No 1999 Emily picture? (Although that one was a dud - barely a tropical storm)

Had Emily hit ANYWHERE else with that intensity, I think she would have been retired. It was more politics than anything. Also remember the US, not Mexico, made the call with Wilma...

Mexico doesn't reveal much about their damages which are well known tourist spots by the way

Also keep in mind that retiring Emily really would not serve much of a purpose to Mexico as it would, say, the U.S. The insurance and legal issues are much different and the loss of life was limited. As for the locals... they wouldn't be devisated at the thought of another Emily coming toward them in '11. Storm names aren't as "drilled" into people's heads like it is in the U.S.

Another bad decision (besides not retiring Emily) is the WMO not creating a back-up name list. What is going to happen if we get a Greek major hurricane devistating a city in 2006 or beyond?

I also think the names Katia, and Rina are so similar. This indicates to me that the WMO is being lazy/not creative this year. :x :x :x

If anyone wants to send an email to the WMO organization which decided about the names and didn't retired Emily and you want to let them know you are not in favor and about reconsideration of that decision the email addy is above.

cycloneye,

Since you do all of the Numbers Poll, etc. could you start a Sticky 'Petition to Retire EMILY' thread, and manage it, like update it as people put there names (or screennames) on it? I think it is a wonderful idea. :)

Thanks for your consideration.

Some things confuse me here:

- Is Katia even a name?

- Isn't Rina just a shortened version of Katrina?

- Don uses a vowel sound you don't normally hear in hurricane names...(try and find another short O on that entire list)....why such an odd selection?

- And why would they retire Diane, Lili, KLAUS, among others...Iris and Keith weren't exactly cataclysmic either...but leave Emily?
