The lists were completely overhauled after 1978. Any non-retired name from the pre-1979 lists are fair game to use.

If I remember correctly, prior to 1979, there were no "lists". The forecasters got to chose the names they wanted to use, within reason/order of course (and they had to be female names). Most named the storms after friends or family, including Camille.

I don't know how the names on the lists were chosen before 1979, but there certainly were lists in alphabetical order that were prepared before the year began for every year from 1953 on. The lists for 1953 and 1954 were actually identical.

Actually, there were rotating lists from 1958 to 19670. The 58 list was reused in 62, 66, and 70, 59 was reused in 63 and 67, and so on. However, the NHC regularly removed names when the list got reused. They weren't nearly as consistent as they are with modern lists. The lists from 1971 to 1980 were intended to be a repeating list every ten years, but they never got to the last two lists, and when they added male names in 1979 they changed everything up.

Irma is Universal

Wow, they will still be using rotating lists many thousands of years from now? You must have a powerful crystal ball there to see so far into the future. Joking.

I'm glad Irene is finally gone because I wasn't a fan of that one. Irma is another old name and has the same feel that Wilma had because of the ending 'ma. I'm indifferent to this choice and I do know one person named that.

I'm surprised its used in Hispanic countries and the universal meaning is funny because its not even close to what I would think it would mean.

At the rate inflation is presently galloping, 1-point-umpitty billion isn't that much anymore.
