This season is slow-start, only one named storm in all three basins so far and no obvious genesis in sight for the next week or two

We're not done with 2013 and its tropical cyclone tricks just yet! :) My view on this SHEM season is that it gets more active, but probably next year. I wonder what the inhibiting factor is down there now. Strong shear? Dry air? Cold waters? Or all of the above?

Update (based on my amateur observations): Well, it's been pretty active down there with Bruce and Amara staying at major hurricane strength (SSHS) for more than 2 days, and at the same time, just about 1000-2000 miles apart. We even had Bruce attain Category 5 status (SSHS) for about 12 hours and Amara peaked before Bruce did at 130 knots, close to Category 5 status on the SSHS. For at least one day, based on JTWC, these two storms were both Category 4 cyclones (SSHS) simultaneously. I believe their cumulative ACE has exceeded the entire 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season, as they were pretty intense for a long period of time. Both of their minimum pressures were below 940 hPa. However, Bruce was below 920 hPa. At this point, they are still active, but are weakening due to unfavourable conditions.

MJO located over the region and increases threat of development around Australia and spreading to the South Pacific.

While the SWIO is on a role, the SPAC is onto a slow start. Wonder if it will be active or not; it did have a couple weak JMA-like TD's in October.
