HAVING AN EVACUATION PLAN IS REALLY VITAL. OUR LOCAL EOC URGES PEOPLE TO NOT DEPEND ON SHELTERS IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. IT'S BETTER TO SECURE A VISIT WITH FRIENDS OR FAMILY IN SAFER AREAS.

DOLPHIN IS CORRECT ABOUT THE TREND TOWARD HAVING FOLKS STAY PUT -- WITH PLENTY OF DISASTER PREPAREDNESS READY, ALONG WITH POST-DISASTER PLANS FOR SURVIVAL.

ALL IS EASIER SAID THAN DONE, OF COURSE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU LIVE IN A MAJOR CITY.

AND THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEED (LIKE MEDICAL), SHOULD DEFINITELY HAVE ALL SUPPLIES READY OR PRE-NOTIFY YOUR EOC OF WHAT YOU HAVE TO HAVE.

DON'T KNOW ABOUT OTHER FLORIDA COUNTIES, BUT HERE WE ARE GIVEN WINDSHIELD STICKERS THAT DESIGNATE ZONES. THE STICKERS ALLOW YOU RETURN HOME AFTER A DISASTER. AND THAT IS A HUGE PLUS, RECALLING HOW WE WERE NOT ALLOWED IN AFTER ELANA DEVASTED CEDAR KEY IN '85. RESIDENTS WERE STALLED ALONG S.R. 24 ALL THE WAY TO U.S. 19 TRYING TO GET BACK ON THE ISLAND.

WHEN WE FINALLY GOT IN, IT WAS BOTTLED WATER AND MEALS PROVIDED BY THE RED CROSS FOR DAYS (BLESS THEIR HEARTS). CERTAINLY NOT AS BAD A SCENARIO AS AN ANDREW, ETC., BUT EVEN A MINIMAL STORM CAN REALLY MESS UP YOUR LIFESTYLE

He had been working at an Orlando news station and they would bring him out during hurricane season.. I am not sure if he is still at that station or not;):)

the only problem with that is

#26 Postby Orlando_wx » Tue Sep 09, 2003 1:23 pm

after that skinny parking lot on all the roads back when floyd was on it's way they decided that they should reverse all lanes of traffic and make them one way back in to orlando another problem roads here are clogged here on a daily basis but i think what raised one of the biggest problems is they think when the next one will come around they are not going to leave because of the hassle of traffic and the thinking it going to to turn out to sea can cause a lot of problems for people on the coast.

How dare you compare a potential Cat 5 Hurricane to a terrorist act? Who are you? a Pat Robertson wanna be..

WHAT? EXCUSE ME? :?: If a cat 5 hurricane hit the U.S, the damage would be worse than that done on 9/11. It's a simple fact. What is your problem? I never said it was the end of the world and repent your sins. I'm not even religious. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

Hey Rob.. You do realize I was only burning steam off right... anyway... and by the way... I don't have a problem..

Just don't reference 9/11 when talking about a Cat 4 or 5 Hurricane... You may offend a lot of people here...

DT makes some great points, and I think he has a pretty good handle on this. I am not saying Isabel cannot or won't recurve before getting to the Bahamas, but from what I have seen it does not seem very likely.

OK, Josephine. :D It's all good. Maybe the analogy was wrong. I thought, based on your pat robertson comment that you thought I was using this hurricane to predict the end of the world and that kind of stuff. And, trust me, I'm not that kind of person. I am a social liberal. BTW, wouldn't worry about Florida getting hit anyway? It's now at 20.2 n and it was only at 17.6 this morning at 11 am. It's moving rapidly away from threatening land, with the exception of Bermuda. I sound the all clear.
But, OK. I'm glad you're not mad at me. Then I won't be mad at you. Good luck if this hurricane does head your way. I will be thinking of many people in that eventuality and you as well. :D

Whoa! Way too early to sound the all clear!

Yes, Isabel has had more of a northerly component to her motion than expected, but the threat still very much exists for landfall in areas besides Bermuda.

John -- thanks for the reply.

Here in Galveston, we only have one true evac route - the causeway onto I-45. The ferry on the east end goes to Bolivar Peninsula, but Bolivar, as well as the west end of the island evacuate early and often because they always flood, even during TS's. The extreme west end leads to a small bridge that crosses San Luis Pass onto another lowlying peninsula just NE of Surfside (which was hit hard during Claudette).

I've heard that it takes over 36 hours to get everyone evacuated from the island.

I suppose, Rob, you were referring to property damage and what it would look like? Andrew was a 5, right? Given the widespread physical impact of a hurricane, I suppose I understand your comparison. Still think it was a rough choice of words. Compare it to "Ground Zero" in New York...maybe, but still iffy. But by saying "9/11" -- well, that has a whole other connotation.

I think it was a major misunderstanding and miscommunication situation. Let's all drop that part of the discussion and keep it civil.

Rob...ya never know...your instincts might be right about the fish. We can only hope.

Oops...time to edit - I took so long typing that I missed where you and John had worked things out. :) Good!

rob's instincts are always "go fishing" with every hurricane in the Atlantic.

Here in WPB, as a result of Floyd, they have many more official hurricane shelters. Also, I think now when there is an official evacuation north, they will open up the southbound highways..95/Turnpike....for northbound travel. Doubling the amount of lanes going north.
