I was also struck by the continuing expansion of the hurricane-force wind field, now to a max. of 110 miles from the center. That's a lot, vastly larger than Charley. I wonder if we'll see a wide swath of moderate damage especially to the north of where Frances makes landfall.

I am also wondering whether the wind fields necessarily must contract in radius if the winds around the center happen to strengthen. Wasn't Hugo intense near the center and also large in diameter?

My best GUESS is from physics (Centripical Acceleration). As the storm weakens, the eye wall weakens.

Kinda like spinning a ball around on a string. If you let out more string the radius between you and the ball increases.

Note: This is only a deduction; Maybe a Met would know if they haven't all gone to bed.
