Our best waves here are generated by cyclones that pass right through the deep water of the Yucatan Channel where Ivan is right now. We should have some whoppers on wednesday..

You also have to remember that this is 70 foot waves at sea. Closer inland, the wave should be much smaller, but still huge.

I can't imagine trying to navigate anything short of an aircraft carrier in 70 foot waves. Wheee!

During Camille the waves were washing clear across Santa Rosa Island-P'cola Beach. I watched it with my own eyes. This is not someone elses report.

Pensacola, Gulf Shores, Dauphin Island and all
the barrier islands will have solid 25 to 35 foot
waves breaking 1/2 mile off-shore with 10 to 20
feet walls of whitewater rolling all the way adding
to the (IMO) 15 to 20 foot tidal surge... so yea...
alot smaller

It seem like something Holliwood would manufacture.
I guess Mother Nature is the BEST SCREEN WRITER.

high tide really isn't much of an issue with a Cat 4 Storm... the tide

when tou are talking about surges of 3 to 5 feet... yeah... it matters.

when you are talking about 15 to 25 feet... (25+ IMO)...

No the waves will not be that much less, because the shorelines are very shallow, especially along the Mississippi gulf coast. That is exactly why Camille had such a devastating effect.

I always thought that ocean swells GREW as they reached the shallower water close to shore before cresting????

...and dat's why dem casinos (built to withstand 140 mph WINDS) will become landbased real quick!! Seems everyone forgot about the surge and waves when they brought 'em in here!!??

Im loading up the crew and heading south to Padre Island, Boca Chica should be at least 8 - 10 ft lefts on the S. Jetty, we call it "Costa for Free". thats waves without the airfare.

Seriously though

I pray every night for that storm to die down so have faith he will lose some steam and not be so bad.

God Bless

the bottom tilts the waves forward... and drags
on them... keep in mind that a beach breaking
10 foot wave actually has a 15 to 18 foot face...
i know it sounds wierd but the bottom falls out.

an open ocean wave is measures by the face...
a beach breaking wave is measured by the back,,,

ocean waves crumble from the top down the face.
a beach break wave pitches out for a top to bottom
break... the faces look biger... but the backs are
a bit smaller... also keep in mind that a 70 foot
wave breaks in 35 feet of water... and then you have
whitewater rushing... here in Mississippi 35 feet is
a full mile outside the islands...

Well, NWS Mobile had a high surf advisory up a while ago and then took it back down. (something about 8 foot surge in bay and inland waterway). They really must be in fast motion.
